Serial Frontal Hairline Monitoring

Monitor the progression of pattern hair loss and frontal fibrosing alopecia with our serial frontal hairline monitoring service.

What is serial frontal hairline monitoring?

Serial frontal hairline monitoring is a method we use to track changes in the hairline over time, particularly for those with pattern hair loss or frontal fibrosing alopecia. By comparing these images over a series of months or years, we can assess the progression of hair loss and evaluate the effectiveness of proposed hair treatments.

Most importantly, it provides a precise, objective measure to help guide our decisions in managing hair loss conditions.

How does it work?

For serial frontal hairline monitoring, we use a machine called the Tricholab Hair Studio. This is just one of many processes that this advanced machine helps us with, alongside calculating hair density and taking close-up images of the hair.

We use a camera equipped with a polarised light source to view the hairline, capturing images from 45° angles to create a 180° view of the head. Once we have the close-up images, often magnified up to 50 times the size, we can make an accurate assessment on the best approach to take.

This is beneficial especially for hair conditions like frontal fibrosing alopecia, as the disease can vary from being very slowly progressive to being much more rapid and we need to accurately assess how best to deal with it.

Do other dermatologists use the Tricholab Hair Studio?

As of 2024, we are the only dermatologists in the UK using the Tricholab Hair Studio system for serial frontal hairline monitoring. This allows us to provide accurate and timely assessments of your condition that outperform other methods.

When will we suggest serial frontal hairline monitoring?

We typically suggest serial frontal hairline monitoring for conditions such as pattern hair loss or frontal fibrosing alopecia. However, we use it on a case-by-case basis, meaning it may be beneficial for more complicated cases of other conditions too.
