What is the Tricholab Hair Studio system?
The Tricholab Hair System is an advanced diagnostic tool used to analyse and monitor hair and scalp conditions, particularly in cases of hair loss. It combines high-resolution imaging with specialised software to provide detailed assessments of hair density, follicle health, and scalp condition.
As of 2024, we are currently the only dermatologists in the UK to use this system for treating hair loss. This gives us advantages over many other hair clinics, especially on timings and the extensive data we can collect.
System features
Our Tricholab Hair System has a variety of features to help monitor hair conditions, allowing us to provide accurate assessments and bespoke treatment. Such features include:
Polarised light imaging
The system uses a camera with polarised light to capture detailed images of the scalp and hair, allowing for precise visualisations without glare, even in hard-to-see areas.
Magnification
The system can magnify areas up to 120 times, enabling close examination of individual hair fibres, hair follicles, and scalp conditions.
Hair density calculation
The software analyses the density of hair in specific areas, comparing the size, thickness, and arrangement of hair fibres between different scalp regions (such as the top, sides, and back of the head).
Real-time hair type analysis
The system can categorise hairs into thin, medium, and thick types, and it can do this analysis in real-time during patient consultations.
Virtual tattoo
This function allows precise tracking by identifying the same spot on the scalp over time, ensuring consistent monitoring during follow-up visits.
Formal reporting
For highly accurate and detailed results, the images and data can be sent off for formal analysis, generating a comprehensive report at an additional cost.

Uses in serial frontal hairline monitoring
The Tricholab Hair Studio plays a vital role in serial frontal hairline monitoring by providing advanced imaging and analysis tools that enable precise tracking of hairline changes over time. We tend to use this for pattern hair loss and frontal fibrosing alopecia, especially in more severe or aggressive cases where we need to determine the best course of action.
The system ensures consistent imaging through the use of a chin rest and a camera arm that swings around, capturing the head from multiple 45° angles to provide a 180° view of the hairline. This consistent positioning allows accurate comparisons over time.
