When it comes to mole mapping, we understand the importance of detecting issues early on. Whether it be suspicious moles or large amounts of them, proactivity is key.
Who we help
Individuals with a history of skin cancer
Those who have previously had skin cancer or have a family history of the disease may opt for mole mapping as a proactive measure to detect any new or changing moles early.
High-risk individuals
People with atypical or suspicious looking moles should look at mole mapping to proactively identify and deal with potential skin cancer.
People with fair-skin
Having fair skin, light eyes, or light hair means lower levels of melanin, thus increasing the risk of skin cancer.
Outdoor workers
Working outdoors means increasing exposure to the sun and the risk of skin cancer, thus affecting the likes of construction workers, farmers, and others.
Frequent travellers to hot climates
People who travel abroad often to sunnier countries should consider the impact this has on their skin health.
Individuals with numerous moles
Having a large number of moles may be a sign to undergo mole mapping as a proactive measure in the event of developing skin cancer.
People with previous skin biopsies
If you have recently undergone a skin biopsy for moles, lesions, or any other skin issues, mole mapping can detect any changes and serve as a form of surveillance. This can prevent harmless moles being removed unnecessarily, ensuring we only remove suspicious moles or those with documented changes.
Anyone who is concerned
If you are concerned about anything to do with your moles, undergoing mole mapping can help for peace of mind and outline any potential areas of concern. We tend to advise patients with these concerns to undergo a general skin check beforehand and then we can proceed from there.
What to expect from our mole mapping service
Here is an overview of our mole mapping service, detailing what to expect and the steps involved. This will provide insight into our internal processes before you schedule an appointment.
Comprehensive Risk Assessment
At the first meeting with one of our experienced team, we will assess all your risk factors for skin cancer and melanoma. This includes your medical history, previous skin conditions, family history of skin cancer, and personal concerns. We will also explain the mole mapping procedure in detail, including the technology and equipment used, the areas of the body we will examine, and what you should expect during the process.
Head-to-Toe Examination
We will examine your skin from head to toe and then you will be asked to stand in a variety of body positions to make sure all areas are captured by the machine. Hair should be tied back, jewellery should be removed and the process is best carried out when you have not got makeup on, fake tan or a dark real tan. Very hairy men should consider shaving their chests/backs for optimum views.
Photographs of the skin
We will also take high-resolution photographs of your skin during the examination to serve as a baseline for future comparisons.
Advanced Imaging Technology
The ATBM machine produces a mosaic with every skin blemish. The dermatologist will determine which lesions are concerning – usually the larger or asymmetrical lesions or lesions with multiple colours. Close up images of high risk lesions are taken using the best in class high powered videodermatoscope – the Medicam 1000. These close up images are all linked and mapped to the background photos.
Analysis
After the examination and recording of any findings, we will analyse the results to see if any of the features indicate a risk of skin cancer.
Discussing the findings with you
We will discuss the findings with you and explain what your next steps should be.
Routine Follow-Ups
Most patients will benefit from a routine repeat follow up scan. The machine will compare all images to the previous visit. All lesions that are the same are marked with a white ring. Any changing moles are marked with a yellow ring and any new skin lesions are marked with a red ring. The machine can remove all the unchanging white ringed lesions to leave the clinician to focus on the changing and new lesions. These lesions need to be more closely monitored and close up photographs will be taken. This makes the second visit more lengthy but also ensures we focus on the lesions of concern.
